Kushner Says CNN Buried the Sentence That Cleared Him
Jared Kushner accused CNN on Friday of writing a headline its own reporting did not support, and of putting the part that undercut it behind a paywall.
The story concerned his investment firm and his diplomatic work. CNN published a piece headlined “How Jared Kushner’s firm’s investment in an Israeli company could be a major conflict of interest.”
The underlying facts are not in dispute. Kushner served as a key negotiator on the Gaza war while his firm, Affinity Partners, held a large stake in Phoenix Financial, an Israeli company with investments in Israeli defense firms including Elbit Systems.
Kushner’s objection was not to those facts. It was to what CNN did with them.
He pointed to a sentence ten paragraphs into the piece, on the far side of the paywall, where CNN wrote that it “found no indication that Kushner’s actions as a diplomat directly affected the investments reviewed.”
That is the network reporting that it looked for wrongdoing and did not find any. A reader who saw only the headline came away with the opposite impression.
“Deeply misleading story and headline,” Kushner wrote on X.
He also disputed how the holding itself had been characterized, calling Phoenix “the Israeli equivalent of Vanguard or Fidelity” — a broad financial institution rather than a bet on defense contractors.
His closing line was the sharpest. “Those facts make for a less provocative headline, but a much more accurate story.”
A CNN spokesperson said the network stands by its reporting. Fox News reported the exchange.
Set aside who has the better of the argument about Phoenix Financial, because the mechanic Kushner is describing is the part worth understanding.
Most readers never reach the tenth paragraph of anything. A great many now never get past the headline, and a paywall guarantees it for everyone who has not paid.
So a story can be accurate in full and function as an accusation in practice. The exculpatory line exists, which protects the outlet, and almost nobody will ever reach it, which is where the damage happens.
That is not a correction problem. There is nothing to correct, which is precisely why it works.
